Cervical Laminoplasty

Cervical laminoplasty in Greater Chicagoland

The Spine Center, located in Park Ridge, IL, is committed to providing Chicago area residents with state of the art spinal treatment options including cervical laminoplasty. It is a motion-preserving procedure, used to relieve spinal cord pressure. Request an appointment for consultation and more information on how we can help you.

TREATABLE CONDITIONS

Cervical laminoplasty may be recommended if there is insufficient space between neck vertebra, causing harmful pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. This often occurs due to conditions such as:

  • Spinal tumors – Growths, whether malignant or benign, can crowd the spinal cord and nerves, with debilitating effects. The symptoms can include pain, neurological problems, and possibly even paralysis.
  • Spinal stenosis – The most common reason for surgical treatment in older adults. It is a narrowing of the spinal cord, which causes pressure on the nerve roots. Although spinal stenosis is more common in the lumbar (lower back) region, it is more dangerous when it occurs in the cervical (neck) region.
  • Syringomyelia – This is a cyst (fluid-filled growth) on the spinal cord. As it expands, it compresses the nerves and spinal cord.

ABOUT THE CERVICAL  LAMINOPLASTY

During the cervical laminoplasty surgery, a portion of the bone is removed from one or several vertebra in the neck. It does not involve fusion; therefore, it shouldn’t limit your range of motion.

The procedure is performed under anesthesia. The surgeon removes a small, rectangular-shaped piece of bone from the vertebra using a high speed, precision bur. During the procedure, the surgeon will also examine the bone for spurs. If found, the spurs are cleared as well. When the spine is decompressed adequately, drain tubes are placed and the incision is closed. After surgery, the patient will need to limit activities for a few months and probably wear a spinal collar for a short while.
